For many Afrikaners, December 16 is the most significant day in their cultural history. It was on that day in 1838 that a small group of Voortrekkers inflicted a heavy defeat on the Zulu armies at Blood River. Previously known as the "Day of the Covenant", December 16 is now officially designated (by the new government) the "Day of Reconciliation".
Every December 16, large numbers of Afrikaners (and others) gather at the Voortrekker Monument where, at exactly midday and only on that day, a beam of sunlight projects through the roof and onto the plinth.
This shot was taken as the pool of light slowly moved up the plinth as midday approached.
