Is the LG G4 the best smartphone camera?

Is LG's latest offering the best smartphone for photography? There are many who think so.

There is absolutely no doubt, smartphone cameras have come a long way over the last few years. In the right conditions and circumstances, they are capable of producing astoundingly good images and are increasingly pushing point-and-shoot cameras into obscurity.
Despite resisting for many years, I have now fully embraced mobile photography and seldom use my DSLRs nowadays. I certainly have not used a DSLR for my great love and passion, street photography, since getting an iPhone a couple of months ago.
In my opinion, your mileage may of course vary, the smartphone is the best camera for street photography. But which is the best smartphone camera on the market?
My personal experience is limited to the iPhone 4s (brilliant!) and to a couple of entry-level Samsung mobile phones (okay but with limitations).
Top street photographer and coach, Eric Kim, recently took to shooting with a Samsung Galaxy 6 and the results are fantastic. Check out his work at his site.

But, after seeing the work of National Geographic photographer, Colby Brown, I believe the LG G4 may just be the best smartphone camera available.
Brown's images of Antelope Canyon, Zion National Park and Arizona, shot on an LG G4, are staggeringly good. In an article on CustomSlr he shows edited and unedited versions of the images that are both fascinating and educational.
What sets the camera apart from the rest is not only its ability to shoot in manual mode but that it can also shoot RAW images.
The LG G4 specifications are impressive:

  •  16 Megapixels
  •  Aperture f/1.8
  •  Sensor size 1/2.6”
  •  White balance - Yes (variable)
  •  Image stabilization - Yes
  •  Autofocus type - Laser
  •  HDR

And if you're into selfies, the front-facing camera can capture an impressive 8 megapixels. The LG G4 comes with 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB internal storage and supports up to a 2 TB microSD card! Naturally there is also WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and every other bell and whistle imaginable.
Now if I didn't have this darn two year cellphone contract...
